EXPOBOIS postpones to 2018

The French machinery and manufacturing technology association SYMOP (Syndicat des Machines et Technologies de Production) has decided to reschedule EXPOBOIS, France’s leading wood industry trade fair, from its original timeslot in November to a new timeslot in the spring season. The biennial event will therefore next be held from March 13 to 16, 2018 at the Villepinte exhibition center in Paris.

SYMOP’s decision was made in light of current turbulences and shifts in today’s French trade fair market and in response to wishes voiced by the show’s exhibitors for a national fair in Paris and a regional event in Lyon.

The organizers of EXPOBOIS will now work out the detailed concept for the 2018 event in close collaboration with exhibitors and the relevant associations. In an effort to ensure that the fair best supports and serves the interests of the French market, the organizers will give top consideration to exhibitor requests, e.g. in terms of the chosen display categories and other key aspects. Major emphasis will be placed on the topics of sustainable forestry and the modernization of timber processing and woodworking infrastructure, as well as on highlighting the benefits of Industry 4.0 (or industrie du futur, as it is known in France) for French SMEs. SYMOP – the organization behind EXPOBOIS – is also an active contributor to France’s “Alliance for the Industry of the Future” – a range of initiatives aimed at promoting the modernization of French industry and the digitalization of production processes.

EXPOBOIS is a joint production between SYMOP and Deutsche Messe AG. As the representative body of France’s manufacturers of timber processing and woodworking machinery, SYMOP is the long-standing owner and operator of the fair. Deutsche Messe, a German-based international trade fair operating company, provides operational support. With their combined expertise, the two partners will bring all the key market players together at EXPOBOIS, while at the same time contributing to a sustainable and prosperous future for France’s industrial base.

EXPOBOIS 2018 will put the spotlight on all the solutions needed by wood-industry enterprises to modernize their operations and thus maintain and build on their competitive edge.

Chuck Wert moves from Swanson to USNR

USNR is pleased to announce the appointment of Chuck Wert as Senior Vice President, with responsibility for aftermarket customer support, including spare and replacement parts, technical service, and training.

Chuck comes to USNR after 18 successful years with the Swanson Group, one of the largest independent lumber and plywood producers in the Western United States. Chuck served in a number of executive leadership roles at Swanson, including, most recently, as the Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining Swanson, Chuck ran a millwork plant in Bend, Oregon for three years, and spent 8 years in public accounting, during which time he earned his CPA certificate. Chuck is a graduate of Linfield College, where he majored in Accounting, minored in Computer Science, and played varsity football.

George Van Hoomissen, USNR’s President and CEO, commented, “We are very pleased to have Chuck join our leadership team. He brings not only a wealth of management experience, but also an intimate understanding of what it takes to be successful as a sawmill or plywood mill operator. This background and perspective makes Chuck uniquely qualified to lead and develop our customer support operations.”

Vermeer HG6000TX horizontal grinder

The Vermeer HG6000TX is powered by a 755-horsepower (563 kW) Caterpillar C18 Tier 4 final engine. The HG6000TX is equipped with 26-inch (66 cm) double grouser track pads to help reduce ground pressure. The suspension provides 7 inches (17.8 cm) of ground clearance under the track undercarriage, making it ideal for tough-to-reach jobsites and uneven terrain.

With a ground speed of up to 2.6 mph (4.2 km/h), the HG6000TX can move faster from jobsite to jobsite to help it keep pace with loading equipment.

The SmartFeed feed system automatically controls grinding speed based on engine RPM levels, and the hydraulic feed roller keeps material moving to maximize loading speed and productivity. With reversible hammers and tips, the patented Series II duplex drum system simplifies maintenance and nearly doubles the wear life compared to single-sided designs.

The HG6000TX features a thrown object deflector, which reduces the quantity and distance of thrown debris to help enhance jobsite safety. A single-piece discharge conveyor belt allows for better flow of material from belly to load-out to prevent bottlenecks.

To transport the machine, the operator can track a grinder onto the new dolly system using a wireless remote control unit from up to 300 feet (91.4 m). Remote operation allows the operator to engage tracks for onsite maneuverability and view and change a variety of settings during operation, while monitoring various engine parameters from inside the loader cab or in a remote location. The new dolly transport system eliminates the need for a conventional truck trailer — such as a drop deck — greatly reducing operating costs and enhancing maneuverability.

Headquartered in Neufang, Kotschenreuther Forst- & Landtechnik GmbH & Co. KG will focus on sales of John Deere products for agriculture and turf care and on the production and sales of its own Kotschenreuther-branded forestry tractors. Expanding sales to include forest machines will help the company to strengthen the existing customer service network.

Previously operating under the name Matra, Robert Aebi Landtechnik AG started sales of John Deere’s agricultural equipment back in 1956. The company is owned by Swiss group Robert Aebi, established in 1881. Along with John Deere equipment, the company’s core businesses include earthmoving machinery. SP Exports Trending Upward

For the third consecutive month, export volumes of Southern Pine lumber have revealed an upward trend. During September, USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service recently reported SP exports to be just under 52 million board feet (MMbf). This volume represents a boost of 16% above the same month last year, contributing to a year-to-date increase of eight percent when compared with the first three quarters of 2014. Offshore shipments during September roughly break down as follows: 29.0 MMbf dressed, 8.4 MMbf rough, and 14.5 MMbf treated lumber.

Softwood lumber imports to the U.S. during September reached 1.24 billion board feet, up 15% from the volume imported during September of 2014. When compared with last year, year-to-date softwood imports remain up seven percent.

SFPA members can find detailed monthly reports of Southern Pine exports and imports in the Members Only section at SFPA.org. These reports are provided as a benefit of SFPA membership. This data originates from USDA. SFPA assimilates the USDA wood products data and prepares a more user-friendly eight-page report to reflect only relevant Southern Pine volumes exported and a two-page report of softwood volumes imported, including three-year comparisons by month and year-to-date. SFPA’s reports by country also feature conversion of all volumes to thousand board feet (Mbf). Contact SFPA’s Vernon Barabino at 504/443-4464 (option 1), or e-mail him at vbarabino@sfpa.org with any questions about these reports.

Timber REITs Weyerhaeuser, Plum Creek Agree to Merge

Timber REITs Weyerhaeuser (NYSE:  WY) and Plum Creek (NYSE: PCL) said Nov. 8 that they have agreed to merge, creating a combined company with a current market value of $23 billion.

The new company will retain the Weyerhaeuser name and ticker symbol.  It will be the largest private owner of timberland in the United States, the companies said, with assets of more than 13 million acres. The companies also said they expect to realize annual cost synergies of $100 million.

Doyle Simons, current president and CEO of Weyerhaeuser, will serve as president and CEO of the new company. Plum Creek CEO Rick Holley will serve as non-executive chairman. The transaction is expected to close in the late first quarter or early second quarter of 2016.

“The breadth and diversity of our combined land and timber assets uniquely position the new company to capitalize fully on the improving housing market, continue to capture higher and better use land values across the combined portfolio, and create additional opportunities to build lasting value,” Holley said.

Under the terms of the deal, Plum Creek shareholders will receive 1.60 shares of Weyerhaeuser for each share of Plum Creek held. This represents a premium of 13.8 percent to a weighted average of Plum Creek shares to Weyerhaeuser shares, according to the companies.

Weyerhaeuser Shareholders Will Own 65 Percent of New Company
Once the deal is closed, Weyerhaeuser shareholders will own approximately 65 percent of the combined company’s common stock, with Plum Creek shareholders owning 35 percent.  Weyerhaeuser said it intends to execute a $2.5 billion share repurchase shortly after closing.

Analysts said they were intrigued by the long-term value creation possibilities that Simons could bring to the expanded platform.

“Making the deal work will require that Weyerhaeuser retain Plum Creek’s strong field foresters and the firm’s capital-savvy approach to timberland management. A strong and active presence by Rick Holley on the Weyerhaeuser board should help that process,” said Mark Wilde, analyst at BMO Capital Markets Corp.

Collin Mings, analyst at Raymond James, noted that the three other timber REITs, CatchMark Timber Trust, Inc. (NYSE: CTT), Rayonier Inc. (NYSE: RYN) and Potlach Corp. (NASDAQ: PCH) could receive a near-term bounce on thoughts that more mergers and acquisitions activity is on the horizon. However, Weyerhaeuser – the most logical acquirer – “will be sidelined for the near/intermediate term digesting the Plum Creek portfolio,” Mings added.

Separately, Weyerhaeuser said it has authorized the exploration of strategic alternatives for its Cellulose Fibers business. Operations include five pulp mills, two modified fiber mills, one liquid packaging board facility, and one publishing papers joint-venture facility.
