ANDRITZ starts up a single-line Eucalyptus pulp mill for Suzano in Brazil

International technology group ANDRITZ has successfully commenced operations at a new pulp mill for Brazilian pulp producer Suzano in Ribas do Rio Pardo, Mato Grosso do Sul. Once fully operational, this facility will be the world’s largest single-line eucalyptus pulp mill, boasting an annual production capacity of 2.55 million tons.

Remarkably, the mill will operate without fossil fuels, utilizing 100% planted trees as raw material. It will be energy self-sufficient, generating surplus green power for local suppliers and the national grid.

“This new pulp mill will increase our production capacity while significantly reducing our environmental impact, supporting our financial and environmental goals. The cutting-edge technologies applied are in line with our commitment to sustainability and innovation. Trust and reliability are essential in a project like this, and we found both in our partnership with ANDRITZ,” stated Maurício Miranda, Director of Engineering at Suzano and responsible for the construction of the mill.

ANDRITZ provided a highly resource-efficient pulp mill featuring advanced technologies for fiber production and chemical recovery on an EPCC basis (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Civil Works). The supply included a comprehensive wood processing plant with five chipping lines, the world’s largest single-line fiberline (capacity over 8,000 adt/d) with unique washing and bleaching technology based on DD-Washers, an innovative pulp drying system with two energy-efficient drying lines, an energy-efficient black liquor evaporation plant, a HERB recovery boiler to maximize steam production for power generation, a biomass power boiler utilizing ANDRITZ EcoFluid Bubbling Fluidized Bed (BFB) technology, and a complete white liquor plant with recausticizing plant and two lime kilns.

To further enhance the mill’s environmental performance, ANDRITZ is also providing gasification plants for fossil-free operation of the lime kilns and a SulfoLoop sulfuric acid plant to produce commercial-grade sulfuric acid from the mill’s concentrated odorous gases and elemental sulfur. This innovation will recycle sulfur from waste streams, making the mill completely self-sufficient in sulfuric acid.

“We are honored that Suzano has chosen us as their EPCC partner for the implementation of this flagship project, using our most advanced technologies for efficiency and circularity,” said ANDRITZ Executive Board Member Jarno Nymark.

NZ – Foreign buyer saves Kawerau jobs

More than 160 jobs at the Kawerau pulp and paper mills will be saved as a result of a US majority-owned buyer picking up the assets. The Overseas Investment Office has given approval for NS Norway to buy Norwegian company Norske Skog’s Kawerau assets for $29.9 million.

The OIO said Norse Skog was financially distressed and owned the freehold interest in 351 hectares at Fletcher Ave, Kawerau where the mill is located, and 48ha at Springs Rd Kawerau.

“We consider that without this Investment, the Tasman mill and New Zealand- based business of Norske Skog Tasman are likely to be closed down in the short term,” the OIO said. “This Investment is likely to enable the business and Tasman mill to continue operating while it is economically feasible to do so.”

Norske Skog’s New Zealand subsidiaries have assets valued at more than $100m, but the OIO consent refers to the “sensitive land” that requires OIO consent.

The buyer, NS Norway, is an international newsprint and magazine paper producer that has been operating for about 50 years.

NS Norway intends to continue to run the business from New Zealand in conjunction with its international paper mills and product supply chains across several countries including Austria, Ireland, Poland, and Australia.

“We note that the international paper market is experiencing aggregate oversupply issues and there is generally expected to be on-going decreasing demand for paper products over the longer term,” the OIO said.

Government ministers were satisfied that the investment would be likely to achieve a number of benefits, including saving the 160 jobs, maintaining export receipts of more than $65m a year, market competition in the chip and pulp log processing industry particularly in the central North Island, maintaining productivity on the land, and continuing to produce approximately 140-150 kilotonnes of newsprint.

Pulp Mill Holding acquired the Voronezh “Europeans”

The group of companies Pulp Mill Holding announces the conclusion of a transaction for the acquisition of 100% of the shares of OOO Evropak, a corrugated cardboard and corrugated packaging plant in the Voronezh Region (Maslovsky, 1st Parkovaya Street).

The amount of the transaction was not disclosed.

The asset of Pulp Mill Holding – OOO “Evropak” – is registered at the address Voronezh, Zemlyachki, 15, off.22.

At the moment the plant of the Group of Companies is in the final stage of construction and commissioning. Irina Galakhova, executive director and head of the business unit “Corrugated packaging” of ARHBUM, explained that the Group’s Voronezh asset will be equipped with high-tech equipment of European and Japanese production, which will allow production of the highest quality in accordance with the standards adopted by Arkhbum.

Irina Galakhova also informed that by the end of 2018 the plant will be put into operation and will start producing finished products. The equipment “Europeak” will produce products similar to those produced at the sites of JSC “Arkhbum” in Podolsk and Istra district: 3-and 5-layer corrugated products – 4-valve corrugated boxes, boxes of rotary and flat die-cutting. .

Within a year after the transfer of the asset to Pulp Mill Holding, the shipment of the products will be carried out on behalf of OOO Evropak (Maslovsky, 1st Parkovaya Street). At the same time, Pulp Mill Holding will focus on the implementation of the modernization program “Europeak” and the building of the sales concept of the enterprise.

After this transitional period in 2020, Europeak will be fully integrated into Arkhbum. And, thus, the corrugated divisions Pulp Mill Holding will include three sites – Podolsky, Istra and Voronezh branches “Arkhbum”.

Commenting on the transaction, a member of the Board of Directors of Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill, Vladimir Krupchak, stressed that the main purpose of acquiring an asset in Voronezh is to expand processing facilities for expansion to the south of Russia – one of the main consumer centers of corrugated packaging in the country. He also noted that from the point of view of logistics (the shoulder of delivery is about 700 km) and the projected volumes of orders of the market of the south of Russia, this asset is also profitable.

“Acquisition Europeak gives the highest synergetic effect within our vertically integrated structure, as the capacities of the Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill in connection with the modernization of KDM-2 are increased by 100 thousand tons of cardboard per year,” said Vladimir Krupchak. “We are also increasing the processing volume in the Istra branch of Arkhbum JSC due to the launch of the second phase in 2019”.

Thus, JSC “Arkhbum” taking into account four processing centers (Podolsk, Istra-1, Istra-2 and Voronezh) becomes the leader of the Russian Federation for the production of corrugated packaging with an annual capacity of 850 million m².
