Caterpillar Announces Plan to Sell the Purpose-Built Forestry Business

Caterpillar, Inc. (NYSE: CAT) has announced  that it has entered into a preliminary agreement with Weiler, Inc. to sell the Cat® purpose-built forestry business. The sale is subject to negotiation of a final agreement, the closing of which is expected by early 2019.

“We remain committed to supporting our forestry customers and the forestry industry,” said Tom Pellette, Caterpillar Construction Industries Group President. “The sale of the purpose-built forestry business enables Caterpillar and Weiler, through the dealer network, to serve the complete forestry industry while providing customers with the same outstanding sales and service support they’ve come to expect.”

Caterpillar will continue to provide forestry excavators designed for log loading, processing and other forestry applications, in addition to supplying core Caterpillar equipment to the forestry industry. Weiler will design and manufacture purpose-built forestry products, which will be available through the Cat and Prentice dealer networks.

The proposed sale includes the purpose-built forestry product line consisting of wheel skidders, track feller bunchers, wheel feller bunchers, knuckleboom loaders, and related operations facilities including the manufacturing plant and warehouse in LaGrange, Georgia, the demonstration and training center in Auburn, Alabama, and the legacy Prentice parts distribution center in Smithfield, North Carolina.

Weiler currently produces an extensive portfolio of products and is a recognized manufacturer within paving, while also expanding into other industries.

“We believe that the purpose-built forestry product line is the ideal addition to our current product portfolio,” commented Pat Weiler, owner and founder of Weiler, Inc. “We have a proven track record of working with Cat dealers all over the world to respond rapidly to customers with specialized product needs. We are confident that our existing product line, our flexible design and manufacturing strategy, and our unrivaled customer focus will differentiate us within the forestry segment.”

It is anticipated that approximately 270 employees supporting the purpose-built forestry business will retain employment with Weiler. A small number of Caterpillar employees will continue to support forestry excavators and the existing forest products field population.

Global timber

Global Timber and Wood Products Market Update

A surge in lumber prices and modest increases in sawlog costs have resulted in record profits for many lumber companies in North America and Europe in 2018, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly.

Sawlog costs, the largest cost component when manufacturing lumber, have gone up much more slowly than lumber prices in many countries during the past year, resulting in substantial increases in earnings for the international lumber industry, according to the WRQ.

Lumber prices in the US have experienced a spectacular surge in 2017 and the first half of 2018. By the end of the 2Q/18, the benchmark lumber price index reported by the market report Random Lengths reached its highest level in at least 30 years. From January 2017 to June 2018, average prices for commonly traded lumber in the US increased by 40%. During the same period, sawlog prices were practically unchanged in the US South and rose about 28% in Western US, resulting in higher gross margins in 2018 for sawmills in both regions. Similar developments have occurred in Canada, leading to record high profitability for many of the country’s sawmills thanks to the high lumber prices in the US.

Wood costs are by far the largest and most important cost component when manufacturing softwood lumber and are often the factor that determines a lumber company’s competitiveness. The Wood Resource Quarterly (WRQ) has tracked quarterly sawlog prices worldwide since 1995. This publication also discusses quarterly sawmill gross margins for key lumber-producing regions around the world. In its latest issue, quarterly sawlog costs, lumber prices and gross margins for sawmills in eight key regions worldwide are reported for the period 1Q/05 to 2Q/18. The gross margin is defined as the net wood costs (sawlog costs minus the income from sawmill residuals) deducted from lumber revenues and is a reliable indicator of the changing trend in profitability in a region’s sawmill sector.

In the 2Q/18, profits for sawmills in North America reached their highest levels since at least 2005, primarily because lumber prices have risen faster than sawlog prices. In Europe, the gross margins in early 2018 were close to the highest they have been in four years in the Nordic countries, while they reached levels not seen in over a decade in other parts of the continent.

However, not all countries have experienced positive earning trends the past few years.

Sawmills in Eastern Russia, New Zealand and Brazil saw their gross margins decline from 2015 to early 2018 as sawlog prices rose faster than lumber prices. In Siberia, the gross margin has fallen 21% in three years with the 2Q/18 levels being the lowest since 2013. Most of the decline has been the result of higher costs for sawlogs for a growing sawmilling sector in Eastern Russia.

SibWoodExpo

SibWoodExpo ready to roll

Hannover/Irkutsk In just a few weeks, SibWoodExpo will be opening its gates at the SibExpo Centre in the city of Irkutsk, Russia. This year marks the first time that the trade fair will be co-organized by Deutsche Messe AG’s Russian subsidiary, Deutsche Messe RUS, and Sibexpocentre OJSC. From 11 to 14 September, the event will showcase the full range of technologies for the wood industry, from harvesting machines, equipment and materials for the forestry industry to wood processing and timber construction systems and solutions. SibWoodExpo will feature exhibits from local Russian as well as German, Chinese, Austrian, Finnish, Swedish and Estonian companies and organizations.

Among them will be such big names as ООО DMI Forest (PONSSE), NARDI INTERNATIONAL MOSCOW and the Ministry of Forestry of the Irkutsk Region, as well as Linck and Esterer WD GmbH from Germany, HewSew and HEINOLA from Finland, and AS Hekotek from Estonia. Also represented will be the local distributors of major international manufacturers, such as KAMI Group (BIESSE, MS Maschinenbau, PAUL, Houfek, Üstünkarli) and MDM Techno (Holz-her, Kuper, Kaindl).

The exhibits will be complemented by a captivating supporting program.  On Tuesday 11 September, the Forestry Department of the Irkutsk Region and the region’s Association of the Timber Industry and Timber Exporters will be staging a number of live demonstrations. Wednesday 12 September will feature a conference program covering a variety of topics, including local investment opportunities, government support initiatives for the local wood industry, wood industry trends and technologies, the commercial potential of bioenergy and wood waste utilization, and the latest developments in the pulp and paper industry. Expert speakers include representatives from the Ministry of Forestry of the Irkutsk Region, local industry associations, the Kuratorium für Waldarbeit und Forsttechnik GmbH (KWF), German and Russian forestry schools, the Fraunhofer Institute and key technology providers such as the German company Linck.

Thursday’s program will be dedicated to education and training, especially the question of how education providers can help improve the efficiency of the Irkutsk region’s wood industry and safeguard the future of Siberia’s forests. A German-Russian roundtable will explore best practices in the education of forest industry professionals. On Friday, the last day of the show, the results of the “Best Exhibitor” contest will be announced at a special awards ceremony.

“SibWoodExpo will set new standards in forestry equipment and forestry and sawmill technology in the region because local demand for new technology is strong. The show also offers plenty of opportunities for discussion and the generation of fresh ideas regarding the cascading use of wood,” said Christian Pfeiffer, Deutsche Messe’s Global Director LIGNA& Woodworking Events.

This year’s show will again enjoy the full support of the Irkutsk regional government, the building ministry, the relevant Russian wood industry associations, the major regional timber exporters and forestry companies, as well as a number of other key multipliers, such as the East Siberian Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

Russia is the world’s most timber-rich country. Siberia’s Irkutsk region is the recognized center of the Russian Federation’s forestry industry and well known for its wealth of high-quality timber resources.
