komatsu-forwarder-track

1 June 2017 | Test drive Komatsu at the fair!

For Komatsu, Elmia Wood is an important venue for international launches in the forestry sector. That’s why the company has invited customers and distributors from all its markets, including the USA, Australia and Brazil.

“This is an important fair for us, above all for meeting our customers in Sweden and from the whole world,” Persson says.

As a global player Komatsu is affected by many economic upturns and downturns. With regard to forestry trends, the situation is generally positive although it can differ between markets.

Forest owners, contractors and forestry officials will encounter a multinational stand with many interesting elements.

Test driving on the forwarder track
One recurring question from visitors to forestry fairs is whether they can try out any of the machines themselves. The answer is normally no for safety reasons and because the machines being demonstrated are already owned by customers. At the previous Elmia Wood, Komatsu was an exception and one very popular offering was the forwarder track for test driving.

“We’ll be offering activities this time too, so the answer is yes, there will be opportunities for test driving,” Persson says.

Komatsu Forest is coming to Elmia Wood with its entire current machine programme plus new additions. Even more important at a time when availability and costs are what create profitability is the after-sales programme, which is being given a lot of room at the stand.

John Deere tip control

1 June 2017 | John Deere presents crane-tip control for harvesters at Elmia Wood

John Deere is launching a longed-for global first at Elmia Wood. The company has now developed its crane-tip control for harvesters too. There will also be the opportunity to test operate several forest machines plus do tests on simulators at the John Deere stand.

“Visitors can try out the new technology during the fair,” says Dieter Reinisch of John Deere.

Crane-tip control for forest machines is a true Elmia Wood innovation, which has been developed over the past three fairs. John Deere presented the concept with the help of a forwarder simulator in 2009, which contractors could test and comment on. At Elmia Wood 2013 it was time for the world premiere of forwarders with crane-tip control, which has become a much-appreciated function.

“Our customers say they move an extra load every shift thanks to crane-tip control,” Reinisch says.

And now it’s time for what the industry has been talking about for ten years: crane-tip control for harvesters. This world first is being presented at Elmia Wood, installed in a John Deere 1270 harvester. Visitors to the fair can test the function both in reality and on simulators.

John Deere is also presenting an updated version of its crane-tip control for harvesters. The innovations are in the software, which means that contractors who already have the function on their forwarders can obtain the innovations at their next service opportunity.

All of John Deere’s machine models will be exhibited at the fair, including the three new mid-size forwarders in the G series: the 1110G, 1210G and 1510G. Also being shown is the first harvester in the G series, the 1170G with eight wheels. It is a smaller-size machine with a broad range of uses from thinning to easier final felling.

One recurring request at previous fairs has been for the opportunity to test operate the machines. This wish will now be granted. John Deere is offering the chance to test operate its forwarders with a rotating and levelling cab. This function is almost standard in the Nordic markets but elsewhere contractors often choose a fixed cab for cost reasons.

“At Elmia Wood they have the chance to experience the added value of a rotating and levelling cab,” Dieter Reinisch says.

Elmia Wood 7-10 June
Elmia Wood is the world’s leading forestry fair and is held every four years outdoors in the forest south of Jönköping, Sweden. The last Elmia Wood (2013) had over 500 exhibitors and 50,000 visitors from around the world and was monitored by the international trade press. On 7–10 June 2017 the global forest industry will gather once more.

Jenz - Cobra Chipper

1 June 2017 | Satisfactory first quarter for JENZ despite fire in administration building

A serious fire in the administration building on 19th December had an influence on JENZ GmbH’s first quarter. The fire was caused by roofing work during construction of the reception hall. The affected administration building has now been demolished and the new construction, which was almost complete, had to be renovated at high cost.

The fire resulted in the largest damages in JENZ GmbH’s company history” reported Uwe Hempen-Hermeier, managing partner of JENZ GmbH. “However, we are extremely happy that there were no personal injuries and that we could restart our operations very quickly”. Despite the clear facts behind the fire, negotiations with the insurance company were quite tough. Agreement was only reached on 13 March. Planning for the reconstruction is now running at full speed, however.

For this reason the general manager assessed the results for the first quarter taking the specific conditions into consideration. “We haven’t quite reached our planned objectives, but we’ve managed to produce a good development after a difficult start in January” said Mr Hempen-Hermeier. Despite the more difficult economic background with its low oil prices, the negative consequence of the REL 2015 in addition to mild winters, the order levels have not been subject to a slump. The reason for this was especially the positive order trends from overseas European countries by the end of the quarter.

The new technical developments over the last few months also contributed to the positive development. With the BA 915 D biomass processor, JENZ has launched a machine for classical composting of garden waste and substrate preparation on the market. “The machine has been widely accepted. The specific product benefits are increasingly well-received on the market” according to Mr Hempen-Hermeier. The newly-designed maintenance access to the rotor, which is achieved by the conveyor belt swivelling to the side, were at the focus of the development.

JENZ is also extremely satisfied with the development of the new Cobra vehicles in the mobile chipper sector. The HGV chipper with its innovative rotating cab makes working with the chipper much easier for machine operators because they have a better overview.

Further developments in the HGV chipper sector are also currently in focus. In the main this affects the chipper trucks which, at JENZ, are understood to be vehicles on which the chipper is driven by the HGV motor and therefore do not need an add-on motor for the task. “We are paying special attention to an improved drivetrain to enable the customer to achieve more simple handling of the vehicle” revealed Mr Hempen-Hermeier. The company considers itself solidly and well-set up for the next few years with these developments.

Kesla Tractor

1 June 2017 | Strong partnership with Lantmännen gives Kesla’s tractor forest equipment a new persperctive (Elmia Wood stand 571)

Kesla and Lantmännen started a cooperation concerning KESLA tractor forest equipment in 2016. The Elmia Wood exhibition is the first big appearance together on the Swedish markets for these two players. The expectation for the future are high.

Lantmännen is responsable for marketing and sales of Valtra and Fendt tractors. As Kesla started the cooperation with AGCO Finland in the January 2016, it was quite clear that the cooperation will be enwidened to Sweden as well. The cooperation does not only cover the sales and marketing but it also involves product development and eventually also production. This enables Kesla and Lantmännen to offer the best possible solutions for their forestry clients.

Interest for Kesla products has been high at Lantmännen. The cooperation started in the second half of the 2016. Expectations are high, and Kesla will invest a lot in cooperation with Lantmännen and Valtra also in Sweden. The forestry section is going strong and the cooperation brings delightful views to the future. Lantmännen is the only sales channel for KESLA forest equipment in Sweden.

Lantmännen shows wide variety of Kesla forest equipment on their stand

On Lantmännen’s stand 571 you can admire a really wide variety of KESLA tractor forest equipment. There are four units for demos and test-driving. Two of these are typical forestry sets with forestry trailer and loader. These can be tested by the customers, under supervision of course. Additionally, there is a Valtra N114 tractor with a KESLA 204T loader and a 40LFe stroke delimber and Valtra N174 tractor with KESLA 316 loader and 16RH harvester head in full action. These are combinations that are rarely shown on the exhibition, and especially in action.

These are also several other KESLA-Valtra forestry combinations for display. Kesla’s factory staff is also stronly present on the Lantmännen’s stand.

Other products of KESLA, harvester heads, truck cranes and chippers are shown on the stands 303 and 185.

On Friday the 9th June the visitors of Elmia Wood have a chance to admire the use of tractor loaders, as nine finalists from the neighbouring countries, Finland, Sweden and Norway, are competing with each other for the championship. In Sweden Kesla’s retailer Lantmännen has taken care of the qualifications, in Norway Schulstadsveen and in Finland Kesla, in cooperation with AGCO Finland. The tasks in the finals require preciseness and speed. The winner will be rewarded with a KESLA proG26 grapple worth 2 200 € – and of course, with a great reputation.

The finals are held on the Friday the 9th June 13.00 on Läntmännen’s stand 571. The crane used in the finals is KESLA 305T with electric KESLA proC control system.

There are loading competitions for bigger cranes but smaller, tractor- installated cranes are often forgotten. Last year Kesla organized the competition in Finland and finals at FinnMETKO.

– The finals brought so much fun for the audience and competitors, that we decided to do it this year a bit bigger – between neighbouring Finland, Sweden and Norway, tells idea’s father Janne Sinkkonen from Kesla. – We hope that with strong and dedicated cooperation partners we can convert this to a tradition.

Tigercat Track Harvester

1 June 2017 | Tigercat is exhibiting a tracked harvester at Elmia Wood

In the first quarter of 2017, 65 new forwarders were registered in Sweden. Just one of them was made by Tigercat. But internationally the picture is different, and that’s what Tigercat wants to present at Elmia Wood.

Tigercat is a big name on the world market for machines developed for tree-length logging. While that will be part of the company’s offering at Elmia Wood, Tigercat will focus on the CTL method by exhibiting harvesters and forwarders.

An exciting combination of both methods is having its world premiere at the fair. It is a tracked harvester, looking very similar to an excavator, with a harvesting head on the end of the boom. It is called the LH822D and has a newly developed undercarriage with longer tracks to give it better accessibility and enable it to stand securely in steep terrain.

“We’re also presenting the new forwarders in our C series,” says Samantha Paul of Tigercat in Canada.

Volvo

1 June 2017 | Three Volvo companies combine forces

Three of the Volvo Group’s companies are sharing the largest stand at Elmia Wood in the new Load & Transport section.

“It’s the first time we’re doing such a campaign in Sweden,” says Lisa Arwenhielm, who is in charge of the Group’s participation at the fair.

The three companies are Volvo Penta, Volvo Construction Equipment (VCE) and Volvo Trucks. The last-mentioned is an obvious presence in the forest industry and at forestry fairs with its timber trucks. VCE also has a solid forest pedigree, with its loaders and excavators doing earthmoving work, building forest roads and working at timber yards. Volvo Penta is a world-leading supplier of engines for industrial and marine use.

Last year Volvo Penta signed agreements with several manufacturers of forest machines. First was Eco Log, where Volvo Penta is supplying its D8 engine for four harvesters in the new E series. At Elmia Wood Eco Log is presenting these harvesters equipped with Volvo’s efficient diesel engines.

Volvo Penta and Rottne
Last autumn a second deal was reached – this time with Rottne, which has switched to Volvo Penta for its eight-wheeled forwarder, the Rottne F15. The switch has enabled both Eco Log and Rottne to offer longer service intervals and efficient engines in the environmental categories demanded by the international forest industry.

“At the fair Volvo Penta is exhibiting a D16 engine for very heavy operations such as wood chipping. The D8 will also be there,” Arwenhielm says.

Volvo Trucks is participating with two vehicles. The first is a wood chip truck from Volvo’s new FH series equipped with a 540 hp engine, the I-Shift automatic gearbox with dual clutch and the highly reputed Globetrotter XL cab. The second is a special version of a timber truck

Ocean Race Edition timber truck
The timber truck is a Volvo FH16 Ocean Race Edition, which means that its upholstery, mats, grab handles and door panels are inspired by the Volvo Ocean Race. The hardware includes a 750 hp D16 engine, I-Shift automatic gearbox with creeper gears, tandem axle lift for reduced fuel consumption when driving without a load, and Volvo Dynamic Steering, which gives perfect stability at high speeds.

Volvo is also exhibiting its L180H high-lift wheel loader with a log grapple, the L150H with a log grapple, and the L120H with a bucket. There will also be two excavators with accessories – the powerful ECR235EL and the ECR88D compact excavator. In addition to the equipment on the machines, additional buckets will be exhibited to show the breadth of possible uses.

The machines listed above were confirmed for inclusion in the large shared Volvo stand as of the beginning of May. It is clear that Volvo is investing in a strong presence so there will be additional machines, services and activities when Elmia Wood opens.
