LIGNA ready for business
A wealth of innovations and a world-unique array of high-tech plant and machines live in action

Hannover. LIGNA – the world’s leading trade fair for machinery, plant and tools for the woodworking and timber processing industries – opens in just a few days. From 22 to 26 May, 1,500 exhibitors from 49 nations will use the show to present a wealth of amazing innovations.

“Given the current business climate in the wood industry, the growing wave of digitalization and our revamped thematic layout, we are looking forward to a very successful LIGNA this year,” commented Dr. Andreas Gruchow, the Deutsche Messe Managing Board member responsible for #LIGNA. “The show has experienced the first significant rise in booked space in several years, and we have already outstripped the final figures for the most recent staging of LIGNA, in 2015,” he added. “LIGNA 2017 will occupy 128,000 square meters (over 1,377,700 sq. ft.) of display space. And it will profile products and solutions in the display categories of Tools and Machinery for Custom and Mass Production, Surface Technology, Wood Based Panel Production, Sawmill Technology, Energy from Wood, Machine Components and Automation Technology, and Forestry Technology – all intelligently grouped in a new technology-centric layout. The revamped layout has been extremely well received by our exhibitors and has triggered a significant upswing in rented space. A key change in 2017 is that the hall layout is more in keeping with the technological convergence between small woodworking workshops and large industrial processors. The current very sound economic environment, which will be the backdrop to LIGNA 2017, is reflected in the first quarter figures released by the Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers’ Association within the German Engineering Federation (VDMA). According to the VDMA’s quarterly report, German companies recorded double-digit increases in order and sales volumes, with EU countries, the US and China among the key growth drivers,” Gruchow said.

“Visitors can expect a wealth of innovations and a world-unique lineup of machines and sophisticated plant and equipment, including live demonstrations. There’s also a supporting program of conferences and forums in which luminaries of the woodworking and timber processing industries will present and debate future-defining trends,” added Christian Pfeiffer, Deutsche Messe’s Global Director LIGNA and Woodworking Events.

LIGNA’s organizers, Deutsche Messe and the German Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers’ Association, owe their upbeat mood to the dynamism of the technology landscape, as expressed in the show’s new layout, the upswing experienced by the wood industry in many parts of the world and, not least, the growing tide of digitalization. Integrated manufacturing and digitalization are transforming the machines, systems and tools used in the woodworking and timber processing industries.

Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things, Smart Factory: These are the keynote themes of LIGNA 2017. They are the names and faces of a new generation of technologies that will empower users of all types to achieve greater efficiency and productivity and become more competitive.

Held in Hannover, Germany, from 22 to 26 May, #LIGNA will map out the digitalization road ahead in all sectors of the wood industry and present the latest technology milestones along the way.

Vermeer Tree Chipper

18 May 2017 | New Vermeer WC2500TX whole tree chipper packs power in compact design

Vermeer has extended its whole tree chipper product line with the introduction of the WC2500TX tracked whole tree chipper.

The WC2500TX offers the same performance and compact design as the recently released WC2500XL whole tree chipper by Vermeer, but is equipped with a tracked undercarriage to aid in maneuverability in the woods and on tough landclearing sites.

Versatility
The WC2500TX boasts a compact design and packs a 600 hp (448 kW) Tier 4 Final engine to meet jobsite production demands. There is also a Tier 3 engine option for countries that have not adopted Tier 4 emission regulations.

The new chipper can be equipped with either the microchip drum that produces chip sizes between 1/8″ (3.2 mm) to 5/8″ (15.9 mm), or the macrochip drum that produces chip sizes between 5/8″ (15.9 mm) and 1 1/4″ (31.8 mm). The knife setup is quick and simple with knife position being set by two bolts — no babbitting needed, which makes changeout on jobsites easy.

Areas of high-wear material flow on the machine — such as the drum, discharge chute, cutter housing and infeed conveyor floor — are designed with replaceable, bolt-in wear parts to help extend the life of the machine.

“The release of the WC2500TX continues to solidify our presence in the biomass and landclearing markets,” says Matt Hutchinson, Vermeer product manager. “The versatility of the tracked undercarriage, now gives us all-terrain capability, with great traction and flotation in various ground conditions. The 600 hp Tier 4 Final chipper can rapidly fill a trailer with properly sized chips, or efficiently broadcast material out over a remote landclearing site, depending on how you configure the drum.”

Accessibility
The 20″ (50.8 cm) high-mount tracked undercarriage makes this a fully mobile unit, allowing operators to efficiently and effectively move the machine around jobsites without the need for additional support equipment. The D4 undercarriage is designed for tough jobsite conditions with high-mounting structures for nearly 29″ (73.7 cm) of belly clearance and rising chain rollers for material cleanout. The tracks can be single or double grouser depending on the terrain of your operation.

A remote control provides certain real-time machine performance data to aid the operator in maximizing productivity through monitoring and adjusting the chipper’s settings. The operator can engage and disengage the clutch as well as control the trip meter, EcoIdleTM engine control system, the chute, tracks and work light functions from the remote.

Exclusive Technology
Like other whole tree chippers in the Vermeer lineup, the WC2500TX whole tree chipper is equipped with proven technologies including SmartCrush, SmartFeed and EcoIdle system.

With SmartCrush technology, the machine can automatically increase down pressure when difficult material enters the cutting drum and adjusts variable-speed dual-infeed conveyor chains. This allows operators to concentrate on loading the machine, and not pushing the materials through.

SmartFeed helps increase productivity and reduces the strain on vital engine parts. The patented feedsensing control system monitors engine rpm and automatically stops or reverses the feed roller and infeed conveyor when feeding larger, hardwood materials. SmartFeed also senses feed roller jams and responds by automatically shifting material back and forth.

The operator can select the EcoIdle engine control system function, which automatically lowers engine speed to 1400 rpm if no material has been chipped for 30 seconds. Engine speed automatically increases if the feed roller climbs onto new material or the engine detects a change in loading.

Forward Operator

17 May 2017 | Who’s the world’s best forwarder operator?

For anyone who wants to experience steel nerves, quick decisions and powerful machines, one hot tip is the stand of the Swedish Association of Forestry Contractors @ElmiaWood. #ElmiaWood

“During the fair we’re holding the Swedish School Forwarder Championships, the Swedish Forwarder Championships and the Forwarder World Cup. There’s going to be a lot of action!” promises Karl-Magnus Hembjer of the association.

Entrants from eleven countries are currently registered for the world championship, the Forwarder World Cup.

“It’s a high-speed competition with the entrants competing against each other simultaneously on two parallel courses,” Hembjer explains. “First they have to load logs – some fairly easy and others placed under various types of obstacles. If they miss any, they have to load extra penalty logs.”

The competitors then have to build a freestanding tower out of blocks of wood.

“The blocks have to be stacked as quickly and sturdily as possible,” Hembjer says. “This element usually involves great action when the operator who is lagging behind must try to catch up by taking extra risks.”

Prestige plus 1,500 Euro

Before reaching the finish line, operators face yet another challenge, when the first person to pick up a specially marked log wins.

“The competitions demonstrate speed, precision and safety thinking and are a good way to create interest in the job of a forwarder operator,” Hembjer says. “We want to present the forest as an attractive workplace. The broad range of visitors who come to Elmia Wood means that we come into contact with the forwarder operators of the future.”

Is there a favourite to become world champion?

“One name to watch is Sweden’s Martin Svensson, who’s won the World Cup before, but it’s always very close-run and exciting so there should be many possible winners,” Hembjer says.

As well as the honour of being the world’s number one, the winner of the Forwarder World Cup also receives 1,500 Euro.

The Swedish Forwarder Championships and the Swedish School Forwarder Championships

As well as the Forwarder World Cup, the Swedish Forwarder Championships and the Swedish School Forwarder Championships will also be held during Elmia Wood. The competitions are run on two parallel courses and two different types of machine are used. The qualifying heats are held first, followed by the semi-finals and then the decisive final heat.

X-Cut saw chain

17 May 2017 | The X-CUT – a global premiere from Husqvarna

For many people a chain will be the most important new product at #ElmiaWood. Specifically, the newly developed X-CUT saw chain from Husqvarna.

The Husqvarna X-CUT SP33G was presented last autumn in some markets, including Sweden. But everyone else will see it for the first time at the world’s largest forestry fair and Husqvarna is preparing for many questions.

“Our chain specialists will be at our stand,” says Hanna Nordquist, who is in charge of Husqvarna’s participation at the fair.

The new chain is the result of research right down to the level of the materials. The company has also invested in a new production unit to utilise the very latest technology. The unit is located very close to Elmia Wood in the town of Huskvarna.

So far the chain is only available in a single version with a varying number of drive links. The version is the one most commonly used with chainsaws, with a pitch of 0.325 inches and a 1.3 mm gauge. More versions are being developed.

Faster with lower vibrations

The X-CUT differs from comparable products by cutting faster with lower vibrations. It stays sharp longer than competing chains on the market and is supplied pre-stretched, so it can be used immediately and does not need filing so often.

“The X-CUT is developed to function optimally with Husqvarna’s chainsaws,” Nordquist says.

Nothing beats hands-on experience, though, and many of the fair’s visitors will undoubtedly want to pick up a chainsaw to feel the difference for themselves.

At Elmia Wood Husqvarna is exhibiting its entire programme of chainsaws, brushcutters, accessories and solutions for professional forestry.

Dasa Control System

17 May 2017 | Dasa Control Systems at Elmia Wood 2017! (stand 812)

Forester is the 6th generation system from Dasa and draws on the company’s experiences from previous generation systems. When the first two products Forester H70 and H60 were developed, it was undertaken in close cooperation with leading manufacturers of harvesters, forwarders and logging units. The result is a product that takes bucking and mechanized logging to an entirely new level. The Forester H70/H60 features a best in class bucking system in a modern programming environment, making the situation clear and easily manageable for the operator. The system has full support for the new standard for reporting and monitoring, StanForD2010.
Now it’s time for the next products in the Forester family to make their debut; Forester H50 will be premiered at Elmia Wood 2017 and will further expand the range of world class bucking solutions from Dasa Control Systems! When StanForD2010 reporting is not required the Forester H50 offers an intuitive and easy to use bucking system enabling productive tree harvesting in a multitude of applications. The focus has been on simplifying installation and operation while facilitating troubleshooting and servicing. Again, we have involved leading manufacturers early on in our product development process to secure the right content and capabilities in the final product. Forester H50 will be on hand at the exhibition for prospect customers to experience the newcomer in the Forester family – the little brother to H70/H60 does carry some punch!
In the Forester family there will also be another premiere; Forester F30 is an intuitive and productive modular software solution for Forwarders. The Forester F30 is StanForD2010 compliant and offers tailored efficient functionality for the forwarder operator’s daily tasks.
In addition to Forester H50/F30, Dasa Control Systems will also launch its new solution for fleet management and remote monitoring of equipment performance. At Elmia Wood 2017 Dasa will launch its new family of solutions for connected, intelligent equipment and visualization of health and production via either a desktop computer or your mobile device of choice; enter Dasa Connect!
Dasa has Telematics as one of three prioritized solution areas and in the new Dasa Connect a dedicated focus have been put on visualization, analysis and decision making support. Just collecting and storing lots and lots of data is not the important thing, the key lies in converting data into information and knowledge. Collecting and visualizing data from remotely connected units enable powerful opportunities to add business value for a multitude of stakeholders; Machine manufacturers (OEMs), dealers, machine owners, site managers, service providers etc.
This is made possible through a stable and secure remote connection alongside a cloud based telematics server application to deliver business value adapted to each primary stakeholder’s individual needs. Dasa Connect will be on display at Elmia Wood 2017 illustrating the power of connected solutions to facilitate even greater understanding and return on investment of your production equipment!

Furthermore, alongside Forester H50/F30 and Connect Dasa Control Systems will also exhibit news from its newly expanded hardware product range, including controllers, display units, keypads and rotary dials for use in CAN based mobile hydraulic machine and equipment control.

We welcome you very much indeed to come visit our stand 812.

Hiab

16 May 2017 | Hiab showcases its latest innovations and vision for the future of timber handling at the Elmia Wood exhibition, 7-10 June 2017 in Jönköping, Sweden

Hiab, part of Cargotec, will present its wide variety of LOGLIFT/JONSERED forestry cranes and services at the Elmia Wood Exhibition, which takes place from 7-10 June in Jönköping, Sweden. Elmia Wood is the world’s largest forestry exhibition, held every four years.

“At Elmia Wood we will discuss and share our views about the future of timber handling and how we see this industry developing in the coming years. We strongly believe that digitalisation and connectivity will change this industry. Forests will be the same as today but the way logs are delivered from the forest to the sawmills and to other industries will definitely change as automated solutions and the use of big data develops rapidly,” says Roland Sundén, President of Hiab.

“The first LOGLIFT/JONSERED forestry cranes were introduced more than 55 years ago. Since then we have developed and set the market standards, first by introducing the top seat, later the cabins and now moving operations to the truck cabin. We deliver the best solutions for our customers’ needs, with a special focus on safety, ergonomics, efficiency and sustainability of their businesses. We take great pleasure in meeting our customers and visitors, as well as media representatives, to discuss the future of timber handling and present our products and services at our stand No. 801,” continues Jon Lopez, Vice President, Forestry Cranes, Hiab.

At the Elmia Wood exhibition, Hiab will present a selection of crane models under the leading LOGLIFT and JONSERED brands, featuring some of its latest innovations, such as the LOGLIFT 150Z forestry crane with Hydraulic Pilot Control that guarantees smooth and easy operation, as well as precise control over crane movements. The LOGLIFT 125Z incorporates SmartBaseTM for smooth handling, stability and low weight, as well as a Hose Protection Link to guard against blows and sticking.

We also invite our visitors to experience a LOGLIFT forestry crane equipped with HiVisionTM which enables safe and comfortable crane operation inside the truck cabin. There are four cameras on top of the forestry crane that provide the operator with a realistic 270-degree view. This enables the crane operator to see the working area and operate the crane using Virtual Reality (VR) goggles. The first HiVision deliveries took place at the beginning of this year in Sweden and Germany and will continue in Finland and Japan, for example, with customers ranging from operators to educational institutions.

Please contact Hanna-Kaisa Talvensaari to arrange interviews at Elmia with senior Hiab representatives on Wednesday 7 June and Thursday 8 June, tel. +358 40 758 1572.

Skidder Forwarder

16 May 2017 | Germany’s HSM presents a combined skidder-forwarder

In the Nordic countries it is taken for granted to use the CTL method when felling trees. In other parts of the world tree-length logging is equally self-evident. Many times, though, a combined approach is what’s needed.

The Germany company HSM has recognised this and is exhibiting a combined forwarder and skidder at Elmia Wood.

HSM stands for Hohenloher Spezial-Maschinenbau GmbH. The company has been manufacturing forestry machines for 50 years. Its last appearance in Sweden was at Elmia Wood in 2013, when it exhibited harvesters and forwarders for the cut-to-length method.

“In German forestry we do both CTL and tree-length logging, partly because industry needs vary and partly because we fell more large-stemmed deciduous trees,” explains Patrick Preusch of HSM.

The combination forwarder comes in three basic types: HSM 208, 805 and 904. Each comes in various versions, including with four or six wheels. In all the versions the bunk space can be quickly adapted to turn the forwarder into a skidder. The crane also has a quick-release attachment so the operator can switch between a grapple and a harvester head. In other words, it is three machines in one.

Two different winches

The machines also come with two types of winches for front or rear mounting, with a tractive force of 7 or 15 tonnes. The winches are designed for felling on steep slopes, where the logs must be winched out before a forwarder or skidder can take them out to the road.

One unique design solution is that the width of the wheel axles is less than on equivalent machines. The advantage is that this allows space for 900 mm wide tires without exceeding the maximum permitted width of the machine for driving on public roads, which is three metres.

The combined skidder-forwarder may be a foreign machine in Nordic forestry but in countries like Germany it offers the forest contractor both flexibility and more possible jobs.
