Introducing the FAE mobile App for the Sonic System

FAE customers who purchase a forestry mulcher for skid steers with Sonic System now have one more tool to optimize its performance and capacity:  the official FAE app for iOS devices. It helps users check that calibration at the time of deployment is optimal for getting the most out of the Sonic System. The app’s integrated diagnostics system and real-time monitoring of the main parameters assist in resolving any problems.

The Sonic System is exclusive to FAE and offers customers a great advantage in terms of performance. The Sonic regulates torque in real time based on the effort needed. This enables the mulcher to always work at maximum capacity. In addition, the Sonic System automatically calibrates the mulcher’s hydraulic parameters for instant and precise skid steer pairing.

For now, the FAE app is available only for skid steer mulcher Sonic heads but will soon be available for excavator Sonic heads as well as for Android devices.

It’s very easy to use:

  1. Download the FAE app from the Apple App Store (in the future, it will also be available from Google Play)
  2. Connect it to the head’s Wi-Fi
  3. Launch the app
  4. Add your head
  5. You can now see the mulcher’s main parameters and check that the Sonic calibration is correct in real time.
  6. The app will signal any malfunctions, helping the user identify the problem, with the option to send a status report.
  7. That way, getting assistance will be quick and easy.

The future of FAE is digital, and the new FAE app is only the beginning.

PotlatchDeltic

PotlatchDeltic Corp. plans $131M expansion of Waldo mill

The expansion is expected to lead to the creation of 55 indirect jobs reports North West Democrat Gazette.

Many of those indirect jobs will relate to transporting logs to the mill from the company’s timberlands and other timberlands, said Anna Torma, PotlatchDeltic vice president of public affairs.

The expansion is expected to help the company cut costs and increase output, growing the mill’s annual capacity from 190 million feet of lumber to about 275 million, according to a PotlatchDeltic news release Monday. Improvements to the mill will include log yard and planer upgrades, a new saw line and a new continuous dry kiln.

The mill will continue operating while improvements are being made, and the project is expected to be completed by 2024. The company has contracted with BID Group for the project.

“We are excited to invest in the Waldo mill and partner with the BID Group to execute on our growth and operational excellence plan to deliver increasing value for our customers, shareholders, and communities,” PotlatchDeltic Vice President of Wood Products AshleeCribb said in an email Monday.

PotlatchDeltic owns three sawmills and almost 950,000 acres of timberland in Arkansas.

The Waldo mill expansion and indirect jobs will benefit the local economies as well, Torma said.

“We are thankful for PotlatchDeltic’s commitment to the timber industry as it is one of South Arkansas’s greatest natural resources,” Magnolia Economic Development Director Ellie Baker said.

“The investment will be felt throughout Columbia County for many many years,” Baker said. “The addition of 55 new indirect jobs will be a direct stimulant to our local economy and my office is committed to increasing the workforce ready population. This is a win for all of Columbia County.”

Rep. Lane Jean, R-Magnolia, said southwestern Arkansas is timber country, and the expansion will have a positive effect on the local economies around the mill. Jean, who has previously served as Magnolia’s mayor and as an Arkansas Department of Economic Development commissioner, also works in the timber industry.

“We’re in the timber belt,” Jean said. “It’s our number one product down here; used to be oil and gas but oil and gas has fallen off a little bit but timber and paper product, or pulp, is our number one product down here.

“It will help the forest owners and the loggers and all the companies that service the equipment, it will definitely be a plus,” Jean said.

“The Waldo investment is an exciting strategic growth opportunity, and it will position the mill among the lowest cost producers in the U.S. South,” PotlatchDeltic President and Chief Executive Officer Eric Cremers said in the release. Cremers also said the investment reflects the company’s belief that “housing fundamentals” will remain strong.

The company announced last week a definitive agreement with CatchMark Timber Trust Inc. to combine the companies in an all-stock transaction, but Torma said the merger with CatchMark will not include Arkansas timberland.

Deltic Timber Corp. of El Dorado was purchased and merged with Potlatch Corp. in 2017, establishing a combined company controlling 2 million acres of timber in Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Idaho and Minnesota. The merged company was renamed PotlatchDeltic Corp. Deltic’s El Dorado operation became the company’s southern operational headquarters.

acquisition

New Forests completes acquisition of over 100,000 acres of Northern California Forests

New Forests, a global investment manager of nature-based real assets and natural capital strategies, has announced the purchase on behalf of institutional investors of an approximately 108,000-acre forestry estate in Northern California from The Michigan-California Timber Company (MCTC).

The estate consists of productive mixed conifers, including fir and pine, in the Mount Shasta region, and presents significant opportunities for Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified timber production, management for carbon stock protection and atmospheric carbon removal, along with continued wildlife habitat protection.

This estate is proximate to over 315,000 acres of existing forestry assets managed by New Forests in Northern California. New Forests has deployed around $500 million to date on behalf of its clients in US sustainable forestry assets and is now the second largest land manager in California.

“We are delighted to be investing in the future of California forestry where a focus on natural climate solutions can help drive positive economic, environmental and community outcomes,” says Brian Shillinglaw, Managing Director, United States for New Forests.

“We’re proud of the scale our US business has achieved in managing California and Oregon forests for sustainable FSC timber production and climate impact. Our institutional clients see the value managing forests for financial returns from both sustainable timber and carbon pricing, while positively contributing to climate change mitigation, biodiversity, and local communities. New Forests plans to manage these forests for long-term carbon stock protection and significant atmospheric carbon removal over the coming decades.”

“MCTC has sustainably managed these timberlands since 1994 and we are proud of our stewardship,” says Chris Chase, General Manager for MCTC. “Our manufacturing affiliate, Timber Products Company, looks forward to working with New Forests as a key supplier of logs through a long-term timber supply agreement.”

In 2014, New Forests was the first company to register an offset project developed under the California Compliance Offset Protocol for the Yurok Tribe.

timber harvesting

Ponsse’s innovations in responsible timber harvesting

Ponsse introduces state-of-the-art innovations to improve the productivity of responsible timber harvesting. The new solutions have been developed together with the customers, listening to their wishes. The PONSSE Scorpion Giant harvester and the PONSSE Mammoth forwarder meet the highest demands of modern timber harvesting in terms of both ergonomics and productivity.

The products now on the market strengthen our position as one of the world’s leading suppliers of responsible logging solutions. The product development of both innovations has been based on better work ergonomics, safety, cab visibility and the usability of the forest machine. We think we have succeeded in these really well, and we are happy to present these new products to our customers here in Surahammar, Sweden today , says Marko Mattila, Ponsse’s Director of Sales, Marketing and Service.

PONSSE Scorpion Giant – power for a wide range of conditions

The PONSSE Scorpion Giant is a giant only in terms of productivity and power. The new harvester will complement the completely revamped Scorpion product family in 2021. Listening to customer needs, the Scorpion Giant has been developed to move agilely in challenging conditions such as snow, steep slopes and soft ground. Scorpion Giant’s new C50 + crane is also in a class of its own in terms of handling large frames.

Although the Giant is the most powerful harvester in the Scorpion product family, we must still remember that Bear is the most powerful of all our harvesters. The absolute strength of the Scorpion Giant is its versatility, it can be utilized in a wide range of construction sites, as the PONSSE H6, H7, H7HD Euca or H8 harvester head is equally suitable for it, Mattila explains.

Unique ergonomics

The ergonomics and usability of the cab have been the main themes of Ponsse’s product development in recent years alongside the development of safety. The PONSSE Scorpion Giant has a one-piece front window that extends to the roof of the cab, offering even better visibility and safe working in all conditions. The cab workspace is practical, and the quiet landscape office has been developed for the comfort and endurance of drivers.

The Scorpion Giant includes advanced solutions familiar from the Scorpion product family. These include greater machine traction and an even more powerful C50 + crane, which, thanks to its fork boom, offers excellent visibility to the felling site. The Scorpion Giant features unique active leveling and stabilization systems familiar from other Scorpion models. The Scorpion Giant is available with a state-of-the-art Opti 5G system and Opti 8 touch screen computer.

The PONSSE Opti 5G information system is the most modern on the market

The PONSSE Opti 5G information system is the most modern on the market. Thanks to its smoothness and speed, it takes the user experience of information systems to a whole new level. The powerful C50 + crane combined with the Opti 5G information system enables a new way to control the crane and make work more efficient with the PONSSE Harvester Active Crane. With the Harvester Active Crane, the operator directly controls the movement of the harvester head instead of the individual functions of the crane, allowing the operator to focus on wood processing instead of crane work.

The optional Harvester Active Crane requires the Opti 5G control system, which is currently available for the Scorpion family of harvesters in certain markets. The availability of Harvester Active Crane will expand to other machine models and market areas in the future.

PONSSE H8 – a new generation harvester head

The new PONSSE H8 harvester head has a strong feed, a strong grip and a solid but agile body. The area of the saw housing is even wider, which makes it even more suitable for trees with a large base expansion. The harvester head is suitable for the strongest PONSSE Ergo, Scorpion Giant and Bear harvesters in the product family. The automatic features of the Opti control automation developed and manufactured by Ponsse control the feed rate of the frame and the movement of the saw according to the diameter of the wood, and guarantee fast and accurate cutting. The Active Speed function allows the speed of operation of the harvester head to be adjusted based on the diameter of the tree species and trunks. Work with the new H8 harvester head is productive and smooth, no matter the size of the trees.

PONSSE Mammoth forwarder – unprecedented load capacity

The high-productivity PONSSE Mammoth forwarder takes Ponsse’s range of forwarders to a new 25-tonne carrying capacity. Equipped with a stepless CVT transmission and a PONSSE K121 loader, Mammoth’s rugged frame construction and powerful hydraulics make it easy to move large bodies and heavy loads, even in challenging terrain.

In Mammoth, ergonomics have been taken into account in all developments

In the PONSSE Mammoth forwarder, the ergonomics of the forest machine operator have been taken into account in all developments. The new forwarder is at its best when driving long distances. The number of runs is reduced when more frames can be imported at one time.

Novelty features to improve productivity

One of the most prominent innovations is the PONSSE Active Seat, a seat function developed from the wishes of forest machine operators. The new Active Seat improves usability by turning the seat and following the working environment as the crane moves, making the forest machine operator’s work more productive. The Active Seat developed by Ponsse is only available for PONSSE forest machines.

PONSSE Mammoth can be equipped with the Active Cabin, a cab damping system developed by Ponsse with a simple and well-functioning cab. It allows the forest machine operator to cope better even with a long shift, as the system dampens the stresses on the cab. Active Cabin is available in addition to Mammoth for Buffalo, Elephant and Elephant King forwarders.

The Mammoth is available with a long rear frame, which makes it easy to transport oversized bodies at plantations in South America, for example. Mammoth has a maximum load capacity of 6.8 or 8.0 m² in the Ponsse product family, depending on the customer’s choice.

PONSSE Active Crane is a forwarder loader management system that allows the driver to control the movement of the grapple instead of individual functions and allows the driver to focus effectively on loader work. The Active Crane is easily controlled with two control levers, one to control the height of the grab from the ground and the other to direct the direction of movement.

The news service PONSSE Active Manual guides and guides you through videos

The PONSSE Active Manual is a video-based operation and maintenance instruction service to support the daily work of a forest machine operator. Visual PONSSE Active Manual is a mobile operation and maintenance help service that supports the operation and maintenance manual by providing videos alongside the manual. The PONSSE Active Manual can be found in the Apple and Android app stores.

Södra’s mission is to create markets for the products of its members’ forest estates – today and in the future. Södra will harness the opportunities created by technological advances and bring new know-how closer to forest estates. Södra has formed a new subsidiary, Södra Ädla, to strengthen these efforts – an investment partner focused on the future of family forestry.

Södra Ädla will invest in innovative companies whose business concepts provide direct support for the development and profitability of forest estates and enable a more multifaceted approach to family forestry.

“Development is part of family forestry’s DNA and forest estates have long been an innovation arena. With this initiative we are continuing to build on this history. By investing in innovative companies, we will attract new technologies to forest estates and create more business opportunities for Södra’s 52,000 members. With Södra Ädla, we will lead the development of small-scale forest ownership, provide opportunities for members to broaden their activities and strengthen the value of forest estates,” said Lotta Lyrå, President of Södra.

More investments in family forestry to come

Södra Ädla will invest SEK 200 million in a range of innovative companies that are facilitating or broadening forest ownership through new products and services. Astara Capital Partners

Astara Capital Partners expands sawmill platform with new investment in Arkansas

Astara Capital Partners, LLC (“Astara”) announced May 24, 2022 that it has formed Camden Timbers, LLC (“Camden Timbers” or the “Company”) to acquire and restart the assets of Victory Lumber, LLC (“Victory”), a Southern Yellow Pine sawmill located in Camden, AR. Camden Timbers is Astara’s second sawmill investment in the ACP Lumber Holdings, LLC (“ACP Lumber”) platform following its acquisition of Cross City Lumber, LLC (“CCL”) in April 2021.

Astara began working on the opportunity in 2020 after it was contacted about the mill by a group of sawmill executives with whom Michael Ranson, Astara’s Managing Partner, had worked in the past. This team of executives, led by Brett Bray, was responsible for restarting Caddo River Forest Products (“Caddo River”), another mill in Arkansas where Mr. Ranson and Bob McKagen, CEO of ACP Lumber, served as board members.

Astara’s lumber platform completes add-on acquisition

Mr. Bray, who has decades of experience in the sawmill industry, commented, “I am excited to once again partner with Michael as well as the teams at Astara and ACP Lumber. We have a terrific opportunity to greatly improve the mill’s infrastructure and bring jobs back to Ouachita County and the surrounding area. Our team learned a lot from the Caddo River restart and is proud of the economic contribution that restarting Caddo has made to its local community. We are eager to get to work and make Camden Timbers a success.”

“The Camden Timbers team has developed a comprehensive plan to invest significant capital in the mill,” said Mr. McKagen, “and ACP Lumber is excited to support the project. Brett and his team’s plan will create a preeminent small-log timbers mill that is highly synergistic to CCL and complements our focus on specialty and dimensional lumber.”

Mr. Ranson added, “I’m thrilled to be working again with the same talented executives that made Caddo River a success. Astara is fortunate that both of our sawmill investments are led by teams with whom we have worked in the past. In addition, we remain committed to investing in an industry that fosters sustainability. The pine forests in the southern U.S. are a massive, renewable resource. The carbon-capture benefits of building with lumber are underappreciated and stand in contrast to the carbon emissions generated by alternative construction materials.”

Robinson Bradshaw & Hinson, PA and IceMiller LLP served as legal advisors to ACP Lumber.

hybrid

NZ East Coast: Hybrid forestry model promoted

(Gisborne) A hybrid approach of planting both exotics and natives will produce more socio-economic and environmental benefits, says regional leadership governance group Rau Tipu Rau Ora.

At a meeting last week the group presented its “position statement” on managing exotic afforestation incentives consultation submission directly to Minister of Forestry Stuart Nash, who was in Gisborne.

The submisson was made to show the group’s position in relation to the Government proposal, put forward earlier this year, to exclude exotics from the permanent category for Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) incentives, with submissions closing last month.

Pakihiroa Farms Limited general manager and member of the governance group Hilton Collier officially presented the position statement on behalf of Rau Tipu Rau Ora.

“Our RTRO position was that we did not want to take exotics out of the ETS permanent forest category but if exotics are to be excluded from this category, then there are circumstances where they need to be permitted via secondary legislation,” he said.

The submission document said the Government should enable a more mosaic approach to afforestation — such as planting the right tree in the right place, for the right reason. A hybrid approach allowing growth of both exotic and native species at suitable locations would help recover highly-erodible lands in the region.

Mr Collier said soil erosion was a major issue in Tairāwhiti. With most of the region having land use categories of 6,7 and 8, most areas were deemed to be at risk of erosion. The submission document said fast-growing exotic species were necessary to address such problems in specific sites.

“The current MPI Lookup tables show in 16 years of growth, pine sequesters 443 tonnes of carbon versus 137t from indigenous. At the current price of $75/tonne that’s a significant difference in revenue. The only activity on the worst of class 7 and 8 lands is permanent forest. A mixed regime of exotics and natives should provide short-term soil stability allowing for the transition to indigenous over time,” he said.

RTRO co-chair Selwyn Parata said the group supported efficient land use by thinking of sustainability on a long-term basis.

Mitsui and Nomura enter agreement to purchase New Forests

New Forests, a global investment manager of nature-based real assets and natural capital strategies, has announced Mitsui & Co., Ltd (Mitsui) and Nomura Holdings, Inc (Nomura), have entered into an agreement to purchase a 100% shareholding of New Forests.

The agreement, which is subject to regulatory approval and expected to be completed by December 2022, will see Mitsui become a 49% shareholder and Nomura a 41% shareholder, with the remaining 10% shareholding retained by New Forests’ staff. Mitsui has been a shareholder in New Forests since 2016 and will increase its shareholding from approximately 23% to 49%.

Mitsui and Nomura will provide capital to support New Forests’ strategic growth initiatives and the global expansion of its investment platform.  In addition, New Forests will leverage Nomura’s global distribution network particularly across Japan and more broadly in Asia.

Mitsui and Nomura share New Forests’ commitment to sustainability and vision to see investment in sustainable land use and forestry as central to the transition to a sustainable future—including addressing climate change and the conservation of nature; supporting the transition to a circular bioeconomy; and contributing to the prosperity of communities where New Forests operates.

Hiroshi Kakiuchi, Managing Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Performance Materials Business Unit at Mitsui said, “Mitsui’s investment in New Forests is part of our sustainability strategy to invest in companies who are at the forefront of climate change mitigation and who are positively contributing to communities. We are looking forward to our continued partnership with New Forests and supporting its next stage of growth.”

Yoshihiro Namura, Senior Managing Director, Head of Investment Management Division, at Nomura said, “We have been impressed with New Forests’ leadership and track record in sustainable forestry and land use and see New Forests’ approach to climate change being complementary to Nomura’s business. As a large global financial services group, we play a significant role in helping to solve environmental challenges, and we see investment in sustainable land use and forestry as a key part of the solution.”

As part of this agreement, founder, CEO and Chairman David Brand will continue with New Forests until 30 June 2025 and focus on strategic initiatives and growth opportunities.

David Brand, CEO of New Forests said, “New Forests has achieved a great deal over the past 17 years, growing institutional investment in the forestry asset class and re-imagining the investment opportunities in rural landscapes. The rising need to substantially increase investment in sustainable land use, along with increasing investor interest is creating an opportunity to accelerate the growth of New Forests. I am delighted to have found two partners in Mitsui and Nomura who share in our vision and will provide us the support to further scale our business and provide new opportunities for our clients, stakeholders and our 100 staff.”

Two representatives each from Mitsui and two from Nomura will join the New Forests board of directors, along with two independent directors and an employee nominee director.

Grant Samuel acted as financial advisor and Clayton Utz as legal counsel to New Forests on the transaction. Financial details of the transaction are confidential.
